More than 20 years ago, Morten Schuldt-Jensen and Sokkelund Sangkor enthused the concertgoers of Copenhagen for the first time with a novel and clear version of Handel's Messiah. In 2011 the choir broke the tradition and performed Bach's Christmas Oratorio instead. These concerts were so successful that Sokkelund Sangkor decided to do the Messiah and the Christmas Oratorio in alternating years from then on. And this year the masterwork by Bach is coming up.
A special tradition at these Christmas concerts is the introductions where the conductor with the help of the entire ensemble of soloists, choir, and orchestra explains and illustrates particular pieces and details of the work, e.g., focussing on a musical theme or effect, or how a theological point is expressed in the music.
The introduction starts one hour before the concert proper and last around 30 minutes. The doors open 1½ hours before the concert, i.e., ½ hour before the introduction. The doors remain open during the introduction.
